A retirement celebration for Loren Frerichs, disaster recovery and business continuity coordinator with Information Technology Services, is 3 to 5 p.m. Jan. 16 in Love Library South, Peterson Room (No. 221).

Frerichs is retiring after a 42-year career at the University of Nebraska, during which he played a key role in supporting and safeguarding the university’s information technology systems through decades of technological change. His work helped ensure continuity of academic, research and administrative operations during disruptions across campus.

Throughout his tenure, Frerichs held several roles within ITS, including overseeing the Help Desk, leading process improvements for IT services and helping shape the university’s IT incident response procedures. His career spanned the development of early network infrastructure on campus through today’s environment, where students, faculty and staff rely on services such as eduroam for connectivity.

Colleagues reported that Frerichs has consistently focused on what was best for students, faculty and staff. His emphasis on service, problem-solving and continuous improvement contributed to a more resilient IT environment at the university.

In addition to his IT work, Frerichs contributed to the university’s academic mission through his involvement in the preservation of the Omaha (Umóⁿhoⁿ) language. He was part of a collaborative team that worked with the Omaha Nation and university scholars to produce The Omaha Language and the Omaha Way, published by the University of Nebraska Press.

The reception is free and open to the public.
