Fans are gearing up for an exciting game between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles at Super Bowl LIX. But beyond the game itself, Nebraska’s football legacy continues to shine on the NFL's grandest stage. Here’s a look at the Huskers’ impact on Super Bowl history:
Strong Husker presence in the Super Bowl
- Nebraska has had at least one Husker alumnus in 43 of the 59 Super Bowls.
- A 26-year streak of Husker representation was broken in 2020.
Huskers represented in Super Bowl LIX
- Terry Bradden, future Nebraska assistant coach (defensive line), will finish the season with the Chiefs before heading to Lincoln. He has helped lead the Chiefs to three straight Super Bowl, including back-to-back wins in the past two seasons.
- Three Huskers will suit up for the Eagles — Cam Jurgens has stepped into the shoes of the now retired Jason Kelce at center; Nick Gates plays as a backup guard; and Ochaun Mathis adds depth to the Eagles' staunch defense.
Last Husker Super Bowl champs
- The most recent Nebraska alumni to win a Super Bowl were Lavonte David, Khalil Davis, and Ndamukong Suh with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2021, defeating the Chiefs 31-9.
Huskers in Super Bowl history
- A total of 63 former Huskers have played in the Super Bowl.
- 26 of them have started in the championship game.
- Mick Tingelhoff, a center who played for the Minnesota Vikings, led all Huskers, playing in four Super Bowls. Unfortunately, he never walked away with an NFL title.
- The honor in being the first Husker to play in the NFL's biggest game goes to two alumni who played for the Oakland Raiders in Super Bowl II — Kent McCloughan at cornerback, and Warren Powers at safety.
- In 1985, Roger Craig became the first Husker to score in a Super Bowl. He also set records with three touchdowns and 18 points scored in a single Super Bowl.
