Students, faculty and staff across the University of Nebraska system have a chance to support a life-saving cause  — and help Nebraska win big.

The University of Nebraska–Lincoln is participating in the “We Give Blood” challenge, a competition sponsored by Abbott and the Big Ten Conference to see which university community can log the most blood donations by Dec. 5. The grand prize is a $1 million gift to support student health programs.

Nebraska donors are showing up in strong numbers as the Nebraska Community Blood Bank is averaging more than 1,000 donations weekly. Volunteers are being sought to help make sure each donation is logged correctly to count toward the contest.

To help with that work, the blood bank is inviting students, faculty and staff to volunteer at its Lincoln donor centers. Volunteers will be stationed in the canteen area, assisting donors with logging their donation for Nebraska in the “We Give Blood” competition.

No training or advance signup is required. Volunteers can stop by during the donor center’s open hours, identify themselves as University of Nebraska volunteers, and blood bank staff will get them started. Volunteers will fill out a visitor log upon arrival but are otherwise free to help immediately.

“This is a simple but meaningful way our university community can come together to save lives and show our Husker spirit,” said Dr. Jeffrey P. Gold, president of the NU system. “Every logged donation brings us one step closer to the $1 million prize, and more importantly, supports the critical need for blood in Nebraska.”
