Sensory processes are constantly recalibrating to match neural coding and perception to the characteristics of the observer's environment. These adjustments affect almost all perceptual judgments and thus have a profound impact on experience. In this talk, Webster will illustrate the implications of these adaptation effects for understanding the extent to which different individuals have shared or unique perceptual experiences.

Webster received a doctorate in biological psychology from University of California, Berkeley in 1988 and completed six years of postdoctoral research at Cambridge University before joining the University of Nevada in 1994. He currently serves as a foundation professor and director of the University of Nevada's COBRE for Integrative Neuroscience, now in its third phase. His research has been supported by the National Institutes of Health since 1994 and provides critical insights into the mechanisms and functions of adaptation in the human visual system.
