The research, led by Nebraska's Dennis Alexander, is modifying metal surfaces to mimic biological properties, including shark skin. The research is used primarily for defense and industrial purposes.

However, millions of years of evolution have shaped sharks and dolphins into ideal forms for moving quickly through water. Humans present a hybrid form that — while slower in the water — offers a versatility to move from water to land.
