Human divers have little difficulty keeping up with gentle whale sharks during an occasional encounter. However, millions of years of evolution have shaped sharks and dolphins into ideal forms for moving quickly through water. Humans present a hybrid form that — while slower in the water — offers a versatility to move from water to land.

Could we engineer humans to swim as fast as sharks?
