The University of Nebraska–Lincoln's Robert Hillestad Textiles Gallery is offering a chance to experience the creativity and craftsmanship of students from eight high schools in Nebraska and one in Minnesota. The textile artists are all featured in the gallery's annual High School Student Art Exhibition, which is on display in the Gwendolyn Newkirk Human Sciences Building, Room 234, through March 28.
The showcase highlights a diverse range of textile-based artworks, demonstrating both classroom assignments and independent projects.
Guided by teachers, students explored various techniques and aesthetics, transforming textiles into innovative expressions of art and design. The exhibition features a variety of approaches – from textiles as a source of inspiration to textiles as the primary material, and even to the creation of entirely new textiles. In some cases, multiple students from the same school entered work based on the same assignment, allowing visitors to see how individual creativity shapes unique interpretations of a shared prompt.
Students from across Nebraska have contributed to the exhibition, representing Blue Hill Schools, Lincoln East High School, Lincoln High School, Mead Public School, Mercy High School, Lincoln Northeast High School, Quest Forward School and Silver Lake High School. Additionally, the show includes an out-of-state entry from the Perpich Center for Arts Education in Minnesota.
Visitors are encouraged to cast their vote and determine winning entries, with cash prizes awarded at the conclusion of the exhibition.
