Jean Ann Fischer, 56, who served in a variety of faculty and staff roles with the University of Nebraska–Lincoln over 15 years, died Feb. 12 at her home near Denton, Nebraska, following a three-year battle with ovarian cancer.
Fischer spent many years as a registered dietitian at Bryan LGH in Lincoln before joining the university in 2009. At Nebraska, she served as a registered dietitian, human sciences program leader, Extension educator and Nutrition Education Program director. She also served in numerous lecturer and adjunct professor roles at various institutions across the state, including UNL.
Fischer was born on Sept. 11, 1968, in Friend, Nebraska, to Harvey and Joan Weber, the youngest of seven children. She married her husband, Jerry, whom she had known since childhood, on Aug. 5, 1989. The couple moved twice before building their forever home on an acreage between Lincoln and Denton in 1999.
Fischer loved to read and taught her two children, Jackson and Carson, to love books, as well. She could be found most mornings reading scripture and writing her daily devotions, with a cup of coffee, as she watched the birds outside and one of her four-legged family members sat beside her. Her unwavering faith in Christ provided her with strength and comfort throughout her life.
She is survived by her husband, son and daughter; mother and father; sisters, Mary Jo Weber, Diane Odoski and Karen Horky; brothers, Dale Weber, Mike Weber and John Weber; and beloved beagle, Goose.
In keeping with her final wishes, no formal funeral service will be held. Instead, her desire was for a private celebration of life with her family, a time for intimate remembrance and shared love.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made in Fischer’s memory to the Ovarian Cancer Research Alliance.
